Your Water. Your District.
More Than Just Water Service
Most people don't spend much time thinking about their water district.
And honestly, that's usually a good thing.
When you turn on the tap, water is there. Your sprinklers work. Your shower works. Life goes on.
If everything is working properly, most people never think about the people, planning, equipment, and infrastructure required to make that happen every day. Yet behind the scenes, District employees are working around the clock to help keep water flowing safely throughout our communities.
Over the next few months, we'll be sharing stories about the services, people, and investments that support the water system serving our region. Whether you receive water directly from SJWD or through one of our wholesale partners, our goal is to help you better understand the system that serves your home, business, and community.
Whether you're in Granite Bay, Orangevale, Fair Oaks, Citrus Heights, Folsom, or one of the communities served through our wholesale partnerships, the goal is the same: provide safe, dependable water every day.
A Quick Note About SJWD
San Juan Water District serves customers in two ways.
Some customers receive water service directly from SJWD. Others receive water through local water providers that purchase treated water from SJWD and deliver it to their own customers.
That means some of the services discussed in this series are primarily available to SJWD retail customers, while other topics will focus on the treatment facilities, infrastructure, water quality programs, and long-term planning that support water reliability throughout the broader region.
No matter how you receive your water service, SJWD plays an important role in helping provide safe and reliable water every day.
One of the biggest surprises for many people is learning that SJWD does much more than deliver water.
One of the most common calls we receive starts with a simple question:
"Why is my water bill so much higher than normal?"
Sometimes the cause is obvious.
Often it isn't.
A sprinkler valve may be stuck open. A small irrigation leak may be hidden underground. A broken service line may be quietly wasting water day after day.
That's why District staff review water-use patterns and reach out when usage appears unusually high. In many cases, a simple courtesy notification helps customers identify a problem before it becomes much larger and more expensive.
SJWD also offers irrigation assistance, water-efficiency resources, rebate opportunities, and landscape irrigation reviews that help customers improve watering habits, reduce waste, and save money.
The goal is simple: help customers solve problems early before they become bigger problems.
Water emergencies are another example of work most people never see.
A water main break doesn't wait until business hours.
Leaks don't care whether it's a weekend or holiday.
Reliable service requires trained personnel who can respond whenever they are needed.
That's why SJWD maintains staff availability 24 hours a day, seven days a week for water-related emergencies.
Most customers will never need that service, but knowing help is available when something goes wrong provides an important layer of protection for the communities we serve.
The people behind these services are just as important as the infrastructure itself.
Every day, operators, engineers, water quality professionals, conservation staff, customer service representatives, and field crews work behind the scenes to keep the system operating safely and efficiently.
Most customers never see that work happening, which is one reason we want to share more about the people who help make dependable water service possible.
Why This Matters to Retail Customers
SJWD provides much more than water delivery. Irrigation assistance, leak support, rebate opportunities, water-efficiency resources, and emergency response capabilities help customers avoid problems, conserve water, and reduce costs.
Why This Matters to Wholesale Customers
For customers who receive water through another local provider, these programs reflect the planning, staffing, infrastructure management, and emergency preparedness that help support the regional water system we all rely on. Even if SJWD does not send your water bill, the District still plays an important role in treating water, maintaining infrastructure, and supporting long-term water reliability.
Most people only think about their water system when something goes wrong.
Over the next few months, we'd like to change that by giving you a better look at the people, planning, and investments that help keep water flowing safely every day.
Because reliable water doesn't happen by accident.
It happens because of the people working behind the scenes every day to make it possible.
