Star in a Water Efficiency Advertising Campaign

Do you have a “Blue Thumb?”

Do you have a beautiful, water-efficient landscaped yard?

Want to be featured on radio and TV talking about it?

San Juan Water District and the Regional Water Authority are seeking residents who have created water efficient landscapes to star in a new water efficiency advertising campaign. The campaign will launch in April and run through August 2010.

More than half of urban water used is for landscape irrigation. Water-wise landscaping uses efficient irrigation, seasonal scheduling and efficient design to prevent water waste. The radio and television campaign will highlight every-day best practices people use to keep their landscape both water wise and beautiful.

The campaign will showcase Sacramento-area residents who have earned their “Blue Thumb.”

They’ll be pictured in their own garden talking about how they use water wisely outdoors through tasks such as:

  • Incorporating native or drought-tolerant plants.
  • Making sure sprinkler timers are set according to the season and local watering guidelines.
  • Adjusting sprinklers and water times to prevent overspray and runoff.
  • Recognizing and addressing water-wasting problems in the irrigation system quickly.
  • Using a shut-off valve on a hose nozzle.
  • Using a broom instead of water to clean driveways, patios and sidewalks.
