Are you planting a new garden? We can help provide suggestions and ideas! Located behind our offices is a Water Efficient Landscape (WEL) Garden that demonstrates the beauty of low-maintenance and low water-use plants and provides you with tips about using such plants and other water management techniques to ensure efficient outdoor water use. Established in 1992, the WEL Garden features nine new demonstration areas, including turf substitute and pond gardens. The turf garden includes a variety of beautiful techniques that don’t require a lot of water, including hardscape and low water-use groundcovers. The pond garden relies on its own ecosystem plants and fish to clean and maintain the water so chemicals aren’t necessary. Other features of the garden include an inviting entry area, parking lot landscaping, fire-resistant and deer-resistant plants, and an oak tree-compatible and presentation garden containing native plants and grasses that provide food for butterflies and hummingbirds. The WEL Garden is free to the public and open for self-guided tours Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call us at (916) 791-0115.
