It has been said that the story of California is the story of water. Water was one of the most expensive items on the Oregon-California trail, with some thirsty 49ers paying up to $100 for a glass of precious water. The San Juan Water District is steeped in the rich history of the Gold Rush era. The district was one of many mining and water companies to spring up during the gold rush as the state’s population swelled by nearly a quarter of a million newcomers within four years. When they arrived at the foothills to the Sierra Nevada, the 49ers began staking their claims to gold and to “liquid gold” water. Amid the rush to the mines flows the history of San Juan Water District. From its simple start in 1854 to the present age of advanced water treatment processes and regional planning for a secure water supply, herein is presented the San Juan Water District’s historic evolution.
