Baldwin Reservoir

A new open-space preserve on publicly-owned land and a new home for wildlifeThe Baldwin Reservoir Wetlands and Wildlife Preserve is a result of a coordinated effort between San Juan Water District and Elliot Homes, a local developer.

Baldwin Reservoir, originally constructed in 1928 to store water, was operated by our district until 1975. At that time, state regulations were enacted that prevented the storage of treated domestic water in open reservoirs. Since upgrades to the reservoir were not economical, we decided on another use for this space.

With private funding from Elliott Homes, we initiated the transformation of the former reservoir area into a spacious wetlands area. In 1992, enhancement plans developed by Sugnet & Associates were implemented, which created the Baldwin Reservoir Wetlands and Wildlife Preserve.

Carefully designed by biologists and other experts, this 45-acre area is filled with marshes that nurture more than 1,600 native trees and plant species. It also provides a habitat for various birds such as the common moorhen, quail, acorn woodpecker, great blue heron, mallard, red-tailed hawk and great egret.
